Storage Footstools That Double as a Spare Seat in UK Sitting Rooms — 5 Picks £22 to £103

Six people for someone's birthday: the sofa fits three, the armchair takes one, and then it's perch-on-the-fireplace time. Five storage footstools we'd actually buy — from a £22 fold-flat cube to a £103 velvet splurge.

Three years into renting a 1930s terrace conversion in south London, I've stopped pretending my sitting room can host a proper sit-down. Six people for someone's birthday: the sofa fits three, the armchair takes one, and then it's perch-on-the-fireplace-hearth time. Last winter I gave in and bought a footstool that doubles as storage. It's quietly become the most-used piece of furniture in the room. Visitors actually sit on it. The throws live inside. It earns its 38 cm of floor space about four ways.

If you're in a UK flat or a small terrace and the only spare floor you've got is the gap between the sofa and the telly, a storage footstool does more practical work than another armchair ever could. Here are five I've spent time with — different price points, different rooms, honest about where each falls down.

How we picked

A handful of criteria, mostly learned from things that didn't work:

  • Seating that's actually structural. A 110 kg load rating or higher. If it can't hold a fully grown adult who's three glasses in, it's a footstool with delusions, not extra seating.
  • Storage in litres, not adjectives. Anything under 30 L is a token gesture. We've leaned toward 37 L and up.
  • Under 60 cm wide where we could. Most UK sitting rooms have a 70-80 cm walkway between the sofa and the rug edge. Wider than that and you're tripping over it on the way to the kitchen.
  • Upholstery that survives a normal week. Wipeable for cat households. Dense tufting, not the kind that flattens after two months of being sat on.
  • A finish that doesn't shout. Half the point of a footstool-that's-also-storage is that nobody clocks it as storage. Boxy plastic crates need not apply.

Things that disqualified picks during testing: flatpack lids that pinch fingers, soft-foam tops that sink when sat on, and anything with a glossy varnish that scratches in week one.

1. Grey Foldable Velvet-Feel Storage Ottoman — £22.87, the renter's pick

!Grey foldable velvet-feel storage ottoman with button-tufted lid

The cheapest one I'd actually buy. It folds flat — panels collapse to about 6 cm — which matters if you're the kind of renter who moves every two summers and dreads the next stairwell. A 38 cm cube, grey velvet-feel polyester over MDF panels, button-tufted lid that doesn't sag if you perch on it. 37.6 L inside is enough for a folded throw, two cushion covers, and the TV remote you've definitely lost.

The honest catch: it's not solid timber. You can feel the panel joins if you sit hard, and the velvet-feel finish lifts at the seams if you wash it (don't — spot clean). Best for a spare-seat in a box room, the foot of a single bed, or as a kid's reading perch.

2. Brown PU Leather Footstool Ottoman Cube — £26.30, the easy-clean workhorse

!Brown PU leather footstool ottoman cube with raised plastic legs

The footstool that doesn't pretend to be a chair. 40 × 30 × 24 cm, eucalyptus internal frame, foam padding, four plastic legs that lift it just clear of the rug. Crucially, a 110 kg load rating — your dad's mate Dave can sit on it for the second half of the rugby and it'll be fine. The brown PU leather wipes down in three seconds, which is the only reason I'd put it within a metre of a toddler with a yoghurt pouch.

Where it falls down: it doesn't open. There's no storage inside — the rest of this list is storage ottomans, this one is genuinely just a footstool. So if you're shopping primarily for hidden storage, skip it. If you want a small, durable, wipeable perch for under thirty quid, it's the workhorse. Best for kids' rooms, study corners, or as a dressing-table stool.

3. Round Storage Ottoman, Dark Brown Woven — £37.74, the mid-range all-rounder

!Round storage ottoman in dark brown woven fabric with tapered wood legs

This is the one I'd put in front of an armchair without thinking twice. The dark brown chunky weave is the right kind of neutral — doesn't fight any sofa colour you'd realistically own, and the texture hides a multitude of sins (cat hair, biscuit crumbs, the occasional spilt brew). Round footprint means it tucks partly under the sofa overhang when you're not using it, and pulls out as a perch when someone drops round.

The storage is shallower than the lid hints — practical for a couple of throws and the remote, not for swallowing a duvet. Tapered solid wood legs give it a mid-century lift that punches above the price. The caveat: woven fabric isn't wipe-clean, so cat owners might want the PU leather pick above. Best for a sitting room you actually use — book-and-tea territory.

4. Premium Cream Teddy Fleece Storage Ottoman, 57 L — £60.62, the cosy upgrade

!Cream teddy fleece storage ottoman with rubberwood legs

The one that ends up in front of the radiator in February. Cream teddy fleece upholstery — yes it's a polyester but the texture is genuinely soft, not the scratchy kind — over a rubberwood frame with felt-tipped legs that won't tear up laminate. 57 L of internal storage, the most generous of the five, comfortably eating a folded duvet or a season's worth of throws and cushion covers.

The catch: cream teddy fleece next to a sofa where a dog sleeps is a six-month proposition, max. It also picks up a chocolatey shadow if you brush past it in jeans you've just bought. Lid is foam-padded and 120 kg rated — fine to sit on, just don't drop your full weight onto it from standing. Best for a bedroom, snug, or home office where it's an accent rather than a tray for the takeaway.

5. Half-Circle Storage Ottoman, Grey Velvet — £102.95, the splurge with intent

!Grey velvet half-circle storage ottoman with button tufting and turned black wooden legs

The most considered piece here, and the one I'd recommend if you're trying to make a small sitting room look like someone designed it rather than someone moved in. D-shape with the flat edge pushed against the back of the sofa, so it slots in without floating awkwardly mid-floor. Dense button-tufted velvet-feel lid that hasn't gone flat over six months of testing, and turned black wooden legs that lift it off the floor properly — none of the squat block-foot business.

The honest caveats: velvet-feel is a magnet for cat hair (we know — keep a lint roller close), and the lid is soft-close, so don't expect snappy closing when you're trying to hide the takeaway boxes before someone walks in. It's also the largest of the five — roughly 80 cm along the flat back — so measure your sofa gap first. Best for a sitting room that doubles as a guest room, or anywhere you want the storage to look like furniture.

What I'd actually check before buying

  • The lid mechanism. Soft-close hinges or a safety lid rod prevent the slam-and-pinch problem with kids and pets about. Flat lids that just sit on top sound dodgy but are honestly less faff.
  • Leg material. Plastic legs are fine; rubberwood is better; felt pads under either save your floor. Avoid anything with bare metal feet on hardwood.
  • The storage depth. Lid says 37 L; the internal frame usually eats 5-8 L of that. If you're shopping to hide bulk (duvets, double-king bedding), aim for 50 L+ stated.
  • Width vs walkway. Measure the gap between sofa and rug, subtract 20 cm for shins, that's your max footstool width. UK living rooms aren't generous.

The verdict

If you're in a small flat and want one piece pulling four jobs — footrest, spare seat, storage, side perch — the round woven ottoman at £37.74 is the obvious one. Solid weave, useful storage, tucks half under a sofa, and the price puts it in throw-it-in-the-trolley territory.

Splurge if you've got the budget and the brief is "this room should look intentional": the half-circle in grey velvet is the only one of the five that earns a second glance from people who don't usually notice furniture. And if you're moving flats again next year, the foldable cube at £22.87 is the one that packs down small and won't break your heart on the way out.
