The British living room has to do more than ever. Home cinema, WFH corner, kids' play space, Friday-night-with-wine sanctuary, and — when guests arrive — a dining-living combination that has to feel intentional.

One piece of furniture solves more of those problems than any other: a properly chosen modular sofa with hidden storage. Below: the model we'd buy, and three companions that finish the layout.

If you only buy one piece: the U-Shaped Modular Sofa with Double Chaise (£683.99). Tighter budget? The Daybed with Trundle (£297.99) is the closest one-person alternative.

What we looked for

  • Reconfigurable — at least U-shape and L-shape layouts
  • Hidden storage in the corner module or under cushions
  • Family-grade fabric — chenille beats velvet and linen for daily abuse
  • Doors — measure first; a 200 cm chaise won't make it through a 75 cm Victorian hallway in one box

The pick

Best overall — U-Shaped Modular Sofa with Double Chaise (Soft Chenille) · £683.99

Two chaise sections, hidden storage in the corner module, reconfigures into U or L. Foam denser than the £400 budget alternatives — no central sag at 18 months. Chaises are 165 cm — tall adults lie flat with feet out. View product →

  • Pros: dense foam, real chaise length, two-layout flex
  • Cons: needs ≥16 m² living room and a wide front door
  • Best for: families that watch films together and host guests occasionally

The companions

For relaxed lounging — Cloud Coffee Table in White with Drawer · £98.99

Pillowy "cloud" silhouette, integrated drawer for remotes and chargers. 80 cm wide — scaled correctly to the U-shape. View product →

  • Pros: soft contrast against deeper-toned chenille, drawer hides cables
  • Cons: low — not great for laptop work

For WFH families — Lift-Up Coffee Table with Storage and LED · £98.55

Lifts to chest height for laptop or dinner-on-the-sofa. Hidden storage for kids' toys. LED strip around the base adds floating-furniture glow. View product →

  • Pros: three jobs in one (table + desk + storage)
  • Cons: mechanism adds a few cm of base height

For storage and grounding — Modern Black TV Cabinet (175 cm Lowboard) · £162.99

175 cm long, low-line. Pairs with the modular's horizontal lines — extends the room, doesn't chop it. Adjustable internal shelves. View product →

  • Pros: hides routers / consoles / cables; visually anchors the TV side
  • Cons: 175 cm dominates rooms under 4 m wide

For extra capacity — Linen Ottoman Storage Bench (Light Grey) · £126.99

The piece that turns the U-shape into a true social hub. 100 cm bench at the open end of the U: secondary seat for guests, soft tray surface for movie nights, hidden storage for throws. View product →

  • Pros: +20% functional capacity for £127
  • Cons: linen needs more care than chenille — keep away from kids' food

Layout: how to arrange a 4 × 4 m living room

  • Anchor the longest wall with the modular's longest section — chaise runs along this wall
  • Open end faces the TV cabinet, with the cloud or lift-up coffee table between, leaving 35 cm walking gaps
  • Ottoman bench sits between the chaise tip and the TV cabinet — extra seat for movie nights, footrest the rest of the time
  • Lamps at the back of the chaise and behind the TV cabinet (warm white only)

How long will the chenille survive a young family?

Chenille is more forgiving than the photos suggest. Five-year-old chenille on daily-use family sofa typically shows: minor pilling on corners, slight darker patches on seat cushions, no structural sag if foam was decent. Vacuum monthly, rotate cushions every couple of months, treat spills within 30 minutes — that's it. Don't park it in direct sunlight all day; UV fades chenille faster than any spill.

The verdict

The full set — modular sofa, cloud coffee table, TV cabinet and ottoman bench — lands at £1,072.96 and turns a normal UK living room into a properly social, properly storage-solved family hub. If you can only commit to one piece, make it the U-Shape Modular at £683.99. The companions add convenience; the sofa is the piece that changes how the room feels.
